When it comes to potty training an Autistic or other special needs child, there are going to be some challenges. It may require the parent(s) to come up with creative ideas to grab the attention of the child. But the one thing that is the same with all children potty training is Consistency.

Make a schedule and stick to it even if it means putting off house cleaning or errands for a few days. Dedicate time to focus on the child, find things the child enjoys doing and include them in potty training time. Be willing to stretch your boundaries to accommodate for potty training.

Understand there probably will be some potty accidents. Have your child help you clean it up and don't make a big deal out of it and praise your child for their efforts.

As the mom of an Autistic child days can be unpredictable. Keeping a schedule can help make things a little easier while being flexible. If you child loves snacks allow your child to have one while sitting on the potty. If they enjoy watching certain tv shows or movies let them watch one with the potty sitting in front of the tv. If they love video games then let them play them.

You want the child to get the feeling of using the potty. If it works better to go without underwear then do so. While the potty training process may take longer with a special needs child the tools are the same. Be consistent, always praise and utilize things they enjoy.

Yesterday I ran across an article about a 3 year old boy who was killed over potty training. Apparently the little boy had an accident which infuriated the mother and her boyfriend. More stunning about the story is that the mom and her boyfriend beat this child for over an hour, left him to die, ate pizza and watched a movie. People assume they can straight out potty train a child. Arrogance, Ignorance and Intolerance can hinder the potty training process. Parents and childcare providers can become frustrated when they assume potty training is a process all children in their care will do the same way.

Children are different and they potty train at different ages. What will work for one child may not work for another. What does your child enjoy doing that can be integrated into the potty training process? Potty Training Children With Autism

It's been quite some time since I've been posting on the pottytrainingsite blog. Mainly, it is due to spending a lot of time traveling and at The TEAM Centers, Inc. in nearby Chattanooga, TN. This center assists families, children and adults with behavioral and developmental disorders. They specialize in Autism, helping families in Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and Alabama.

Recently, my middle child whom I had the greatest challenge/struggles with potty training, was diagnosed as having PDD or Pervasive Development Disorder. PDD is on the Autism Spectrum.

I have always been one to emphasize to parents who are potty training or experiencing challenges that having a schedule is so important. For Autistic children this is imperative that a schedule be set whether or not you are potty training.

Allow your child to be a part of their daily schedule. Use pictures, stickers, markers or magnets to make it child "friendly." Having structure day to day will help make things smoother not only for your child but yourself as well as the rest of the family.

Potty training does not have to be a difficult challenge. Be creative and always include your child. Include activities that they enjoy doing. Utilizing things in your child's life that grabs their attention can help motivate them when it comes to potty training.

Children with Autism must be accepted for who they are. As a specialist reminded me, children with a disorder on the Autism spectrum cannot be changed. They are who they are and parents as well as teachers and others involved in their lives have be creative, working with the child to build a successful connection.

So many times others attempt to change a child with Autism. Majority of the time that backfires leading to frustration, anger, resentment, and even guilt. It does not have to be that way.

Potty training a child with special needs such as Autism can become a breakthrough and way to bond with that child.

Preparing for the upcoming holidays with a toddler can be a challenge, unless you are prepared. It's getting that time to do shopping for the Thanksgiving meal, Shopping on Black Friday and the days leading up to Christmas.

And not all the time will you have a babysitter, which leaves you stuck to take the children along. The one thing that would make life easier is to have your child potty trained in time for the holidays, right?

Getting your child potty trained means: No carrying around a bulky diaper bag, worrying about laying your child down on a diaper changing station that you have no idea if it has ever been sanitized or your child soiling their pants in the store and everyone nearby smelling it.

When you're shopping the last thing you want to be doing is carrying around a bulky diaper bag along with your purse and lots of shopping bags. You definitely do not want your child to be exposed to germs from viruses such as rotovirus, right? I rarely ever had to use the diaper changing station when I was out. For one, they were not as available as they are now. Sometimes though, looking at them alone would cause me to cringe and I refused to lay my child down on one of them. Yes, they are handy, but seriously, do you know when the last time it was sanitized? By the time you get your child secured on the table, unpack the diapers and wipes, clean your child up, put a new diaper on, get them redressed, throw the soiled diaper away, and figure out how to get your hands washed, it gets exhausting! Changing a diaper is not like when they are newborns when they will lay still. Once they master rolling over they become wiggle worms.

The most embarrassing thing to happen is to be in the middle of shopping when you realize your child is straining while having a bowel movement. Or worse yet, your child has one and how you find out along with everyone else around you is the smell. Chances are most stores are going to be packed with other shoppers.

Imagine what life would be like to have a child you can easily take to the restroom to use the potty, that most places now offer toilet seat covers.

You have the freedom to have more time to shop rather than stopping to check for a wet or soiled diaper.

The best part is that ALL the money you have spent for diapers can now be invested into Christmas gifts. Within a one year period, a family may spend upwards of $500 to $1000 a year on one child alone, just on diapers. Add to it baby wipes and the occasional use of diaper rash ointment you have spent enough to at least take you and another person on a 4 day cruise to the Bahamas!

I do have to caution parents out there who have been through recent changes. 10 Ideas For Potty Training

1) Choose videos that your child loves to sit and watch. Place a small potty where they can enjoy them. If you have a portable video player, consider placing it in the bathroom.

2) Use a hand held game such as a beginners Leap Frog or underwater ring toss

3) If you are a parent that will allow candy or popsicles, this is a great way to grab the attention for even a short period of time.

4) Use bubbles during potty training (watch the eyes though!)

5) Play "potty bingo". Make game boards with pictures or just drawings related to using the potty (potty seat, potty chair, toilet paper, flushing the potty, washing hands, a stool to step up on, panties/underwear, a star or gold seal for the middle box). You can laminate them or dispose of them after using small stickers to cover the items.

6) Play musical potty chairs. Make it a time where you or someone else can sit on the potty alongside your child and play a favorite tune or two. When the music is done, the time is up.

7) If you have an older digital camera or if your child does, let them play with it while sitting on the potty. Some children enjoy getting to use the camera to take pictures.

8) Do you have a walkman, cd player or mp3 player? Consider letting your child choose and listen to music while sitting on the potty.

9) Some children enjoy having a snack or a favorite drink. Put a snack in a ziploc and have a cup ready to go for those times to go try to use the potty.

10) Allow your child to take a favorite toy, book or blanket with them while they go to the potty.

Your goal is to get your child comfortable and relaxed when using the potty. Utilize whatever your child enjoys doing or what relaxes them. Be sure to always praise and encourage them to use the potty. Making it fun can go a long way. As with anything, the potty training tips listed may or may not work with your child. One may work while the others may not. Working with your child to get them comfortable is important for successful potty training. Remember that this is a learning experience and the parent is the teacher helping their child accomplish a great milestone.

Recently I was asked if I would be interested in reviewing a game by finditgames.com. One parent who is a customer service representative for the company mentioned she has used this game as a way to keep her child entertained while potty training.

I had mixed feelings about the game but I was willing to try it out.

This past Monday I received the game, the Kids version. As with the other versions available such as at the Beach or at the Zoo, there is a penny among many other items to look for.

In the kids version there is the letters of the alphabet among items such as the penny, baseball, top hat, marble, rubberband, balloon, and many more to find within thousands of beads.

In just a few days I had my two boys ages 4 1/2 and 7 1/2 trying it out besides myself, and three other friends aged 49 to 66. We all became obsessed with the game in an attempt to find the penny. It is one of the funnest games to play, mess free!

Although it says for ages 8 to 98, this is a great game for parents to play along with their children while working on potty training. It definitely caught my youngest two children's attention especially my soon to be 8 year old who is known to be ADHD.

When children can wear just their swim suits they have more freedoms in the swimming pools than children who have to wear swimmies. More and more public/private company swimming pools mandate that children with swimmies on either swim in the kiddie pool only (if one is on the premises), limited to a certain amount of time in the pool or are not allowed to swim at all unless potty trained. Thanks in part to serious e-coli outbreaks from contaminated pool water these restrictions are in place. Having your child completely potty trained avoids this situation.

Review of Lily's Potty & Pete's Potty Toddler books

A short time ago I was asked to review two toddler's board books by Begin Smart. One is for potty training girls and is titled "Lily's Potty" while the other is for potty training boys titled "Pete's Potty". These two books are "age-appropriate concepts and simple language as well as colorful images".

Both board books are very cute and easy to hold for those small toddler hands. They each have 4 fold out flaps for the little ones which are easy to open. These are great little books for toddler to sit and read while on the potty! Also great for parents to read to their children as a fun exciting book preparing for potty training. I really enjoyed reading both books although my kids are all potty trained now. These by far are some of the best books I have read, related to potty training at a child's level.

It's been almost a week since I have blogged as I have been preparing for finals before graduation!

Potty training is very close to my heart after going through so much with my middle child four years ago. I know there are so many parents who have high hopes that their child will pick up potty training quickly only to become frustrated, angry, even depressed because their child refuses to use the potty.

It's a combination of many things why a child refuses to go potty. When a parent is frustrated they will feel the tension and resist. When a parent disciplines their child because of potty training problems they will resist. There may come a time when a parent will have to step back from potty training for both them and the child to recuperate.

Having had a child with developmental delays (which I did not find out about until six months after successful potty training), behavior problems my eyes were opened to the fact that so many parents experience what I went through and sometimes even worse.

To have people come up and criticize you either bluntly or in disguise really hurts to the core especially when you have done everything you could under the sun to get your child to use the potty. You have people holding it over your head as if you are a failure as a parent because your child is not potty trained by a certain age. Then you have this wish for your child to attend preschool only to be told they won't be accepted unless they are potty trained by XX date.

I truly thought with my oldest son he would never be completely potty trained and if I did get him potty trained it would probably be after his baby brother who was newborn at the time, would be potty trained a few years later.

When I sat down with this same exact method I now offer to parents, I was doubtful it would work because nothing else had been working. As I read through the process, I developed a plan. Once I felt ready mentally and emotionally I implemented the process. In one weekend I had my son potty trained. In one sense I was very ecstatic and in another I was upset. Here was a method that worked in one weekend to accomplish a milestone for my son that took a year and a half!

Potty training is very possible with just about every child. It takes a combination of the parent being ready and the child relaxed and ready to work on it. If one or the other is not ready then most likely the time it takes to potty train will be longer. A parent must be patient and willing to be open to ideas in order to encourage their child to use the potty. I had to be open to letting my son take a favorite toy with him to the potty. In his case, it was a huge Blue's Clue's stuffed dog. He was relaxed and willing to sit on the potty and try going which he did successfully.

On the Personal Side of Potty Training

When I usually post about potty training it is to the point. Today I am going to go on the personal side of potty training. What I am going to say I hope will open the eyes up of parents who are or will be potty training soon.

When you are in the stage of potty training you must do your best to Not punish your child for having potty accidents. The results may not show up right away but I can tell you that your child will resist potty training. In fact, I can promise you that your child will refuse to use the potty.

What parents do not think about is the fact that potty training is a learning process. They are the teachers. So I want to ask and for parents to take into consideration:

-Do you punish your child when they are learning to walk just because they fell while trying? Of course not.

-Do you punish your child when they are learning to talk and they don't pronounce a word correctly? Of course you don't.

-Do you punish your child when they are learning new things and obviously may not get it right the first, second, third time or beyond?

So why would you punish your child for learning to use the potty?

When they have an accident have them help you clean the mess up. Let them know it's okay let's try this again. Continue encouraging your child to go potty. To get them relaxed give them a toy to take to the potty, a book or put the small potty where they can watch a tv show or movie. Put it in the room they are most active in. Take them on a schedule with things to keep them occupied for a small amount of time. Be creative and make potty training an exciting time for the both of you.

Remember parents, you are the teacher. Praise and consistency works a lot better with potty training than punishment. Use positive reinforcement for a positive outcome.

-Potty Training consists of the parent taking the child to the potty to make attempts at going, whether they have to go or not.

-Potty Training requires consistency. The more consistent you are, the greater your success will be.

-Potty Training IS a learning process. This is something new the child is learning. Parents are the potty training teachers.

-Potty Training with a positive attitude goes a long way.

-Create flash cards showing pictures related to potty training
-Allow them to "explore" the potty (observe it, touch it)

-If the child is wanting to use the potty in an unconventional way (backwards, squatting like a frog, standing up) allow them to. If you attempt to correct them it leads to the possibility of resistance.

About the Potty Training Coach

I usually do my best to blog often about various tips, ideas and other issues that come with potty training. This time though I decided I would blog about me, the potty training coach.

First, I am a mom of 3 kids ages 12, 7 1/2 and 4 1/2. In just a matter of two weeks I will be a graduate of Tennessee Technological University with a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentrations in Psychology and Sociology (and yes, that IS a mouthful!). Since 2007 I have managed the pottytrainingsite, this blog and toilettrainingsite.com.

It was only a few weeks ago that I acquired pottytrainingsite.com, the blog and toilettrainingsite.com from my best friend as a graduation gift. I have made every effort to get the websites and blog going again while being a mom and of course a college student.

Once I graduate from college I intend on spending more time with my "babies" with the intentions of making this blog and the websites the place to go for potty training advice. I realize there are many websites and blogs out there about potty training. How many of them do you feel has passion behind what they share with moms and dads? It is important to me that I give positive potty training tips to parents before they begin or are dealing with the frustrations of potty training. I want this blog to feel as personal as possible with moms and dads who really need advice for successful potty training.

When your child doesn't want to go poop...

This is a very common problem with children at any time during potty training and even after. It can be from anything: using pull ups, a stressful situation at home such as a new home, new sibling, new school,...
Even a painful bowel movement can set them back. Sitting on the potty may be uncomfortable to them. Medical issues can also be a factor.
Children can be ashamed of the potty, afraid of the potty in general, or feel going to the potty around others is a distraction.

Pull ups are similar to diapers and switching to them can cause confusion (even though some parents swear by them). If you're going to potty train get underwear.

If there is any stressful situation at home your child will sense it. A new baby brother or sister can send a child backwards with potty training. Even my middle child, the oldest son did this. Your child going to a new school can be a frightening experience.

Having someone take time daily to show support, encourage, motivate your child can help reduce resistance with potty training.

Painful bowel movements can result in a child resisting. Be aware of their diets to ensure they eat foods that are nutritious. Make sure they are eating foods that can cause constipation in moderation. If your child is showing signs of constipation give them plenty of fluids such as water, lemonade, powerade and foods with fiber.

If you are feeling there may be some concern with your child resisting having a bowel movement it is ideal that you keep a journal of what their potty schedule is, what they have eaten and drank.

Some children have a spastic colon meaning they are unable to control their bowel movements well. My brother had issues for years until he was 11 years old and was diagnosed with a spastic colon. For years he was punished and even placed on homebound. What fixed his problem? Changing his diet a little and him exercising. His stomach muscles were weak at the time of his diagnosis.

Yes, children can be ashamed of going to the potty. They do not understand that it is okay to try the potty and what you would like for them to do. Talk to your child everyday and reassure them that it is okay to sit and use the potty. Take baby steps to introducing them to the potty in a gentle manner. Encourage your child everyday to get closer to using it. Let them touch the potty, observe it. Ask them what they think about it. Would they like to sit on it alone with no one watching? Would they like to show their dolly, stuffed animal, lego people, etc how to use the potty?

Another common issue is that children are afraid of the potty. Watching the potty suck down the water, the loud noise some toilets make after flushing, accidental slip, lid falling on them (with or without injuries)... Taking baby steps to get them over their fears by showing them how to flush and cover their ears (mom or dad showing them and be silly about it), giving them ear muffs to ear plugs to wear or just for awhile getting mom, dad or someone else to flush it for them and then try integrating back into their routine. Use a potty seat or stick with the small potty to avoid slipping into the bowl. If they have to sit on the big potty with no seat the best thing is for someone to help support them. A lid falling on the child or a near miss can scare a child. Again, stick with the small potty or having someone assist them can help.

Encourage, comfort, motivate, be consistent with potty training or dealing with resistance. Patience is a must and taking it baby steps can reduce the resistance over a matter of time.

Most of us have heard the saying that children don't come with manuals. If there was one it would be bigger than most of us care to spend time reading. Each child reaches milestones at different times. This holds true with potty training.

Some children will begin to take diapers off after they have soiled them. Others may verbally mention peeing or pooping when it takes place. And there are those who just have a curiosity about the potty in general perhaps watching mom, dad or a sibling go.

Encouraging your child to try is important. It's okay to nudge a little as some children will need this boost. If a child has shown interest and then resists when trying, consider a little nudge.

Before you start potty training create a journal. Write down your positive expectations and goals. Make a list of things that you know keeps your child's attention for at least a few minutes. Create a section in the journal to develop a schedule. Consistency is very important for successful potty training. Praising your child every time they make an attempt to go is equally as important as consistency. Encouraging your child in a positive manner goes a long way.

Getting your child potty trained is not a perfect science. It is full of trials and errors as most opportunities of learning are. Parents are the teachers ultimately and it is up to them to make the very best of a milestone in the child's life.

Parents often wonder if or when they will be ready for potty training. There is no magical age as each one will start to use the potty when they are ready. On average potty training boys starts around age 18 months up to 3 years. In some cases boys potty train closer to age 4. Again this is okay and quite common. Potty training girls is around 18 months to 24 months though they can start around age 3 as well. Many things can influence a child to begin potty training. Watching mommy and daddy use the potty, getting the undesirable feeling of a soiled diaper and wanting to pull it off, heading to the potty when the sensation is there to go, watching a sibling use the potty, and curiosity about the potty to name a few. Some parents do have to nudge their child to get them going and this okay.

I encourage parents to make potty training a wonderful and exciting time. It is a great opportunity to strengthen the bond as well. Parents must remember they are ultimately the "teachers" in potty training. Encourage, motivate and praise your child every step of the way.

Potty training can be a wonderful, exciting time to bond with your child. Having a special needs child to potty train is no different other than the fact you may have to spend a little more one on one time with them. Be creative and integrate things they enjoy playing with. What gives them entertainment and incorporate it into potty training. If stickers, lollipops or popsicles work then use them.

Most of all, BE Consistent! Take some time before beginning potty training and make a schedule. Dedicate time to work on potty training and nothing else. Always, always, always praise your child for their efforts.

If your child is unable to see or hear well create pictures related to potty training. Let them feel the potty, the toilet paper. Show them books related to potty training, even videos. Motivate and encourage them in ways you know how.

It's okay when they have potty accidents. Let them help you clean the mess up while praising their efforts. Give them hugs of reassurance as you want them to continue trying.

Rewards should be things your child doesn't often receive. Make it special rewards. You may even consider having a potty party for the "graduate."

Potty training is a great time to learn more about your child. It can be one of the most educational, bonding moments for the both of you.

Earlier this week I was in the career services office at TN Tech University speaking with a counselor. We got to talking about potty training and how the country (Sweden to be exact) his wife is from potty trains children much earlier than Americans do. Around the world and even in the United States the age of getting a child potty trained varies. The main focus should be getting the child potty trained not what age they are when it happens.

It really is up to each parent as to when they chose to work on potty training. Some choose to do it as soon as possible while others wait until it is absolutely necessary. Then of course you have the parents who are struggling with their children when there is a deadline for preschool approaching.

First, it is a matter of consistency. Second, can you stick to a schedule? Three are you willing to stick with one thing and one thing only? That is, are you willing to take the risk of eliminating diapers and going full speed ahead to underwear?

It's not uncommon for a child to be struggling with potty training. They may have started out well and then regressed leaving the parents wanting to pull their hair out.

So what is a parent to do?

Potty accidents and regression happens and it's okay. You may have taken two steps back with potty training. The great thing is that it can be reversed.

Getting your child on a schedule, being consistent and praising your child will bring positive results. Encourage your child and give them a nudge with using the potty. Make it a fun and exciting time in their life even when they have accidents. Get them involved with the process because it is about them! Granted they may not be enjoying cleaning the mess they made though this will reinforce them to make an effort to use the potty.

Make potty training a positive experience even when there are setbacks. This will instill in the child to keep trying.

There are a lot of changes that take place during potty training: No more diapers, hello underwear and saving money! More independence for the potty trained child and no more taking time to change diapers. It means getting accepted into preschool and feeling like a big kid.

Potty accidents may happen and that is okay. It's a normal part of the potty training process. One suggestion is taking the child to the potty on a schedule again until the accidents stop. If they are occurring at night be sure to take them to the potty prior to bed time. Eliminate fluids at least an hour before bed time. Also, consider leaving a potty chair beside the bed.

Potty training comes at a crucial time in a child's life. Parents, guardians and babysitters all contribute to sculpting a child. What you say and what you do impacts a child's life whether it is positive or negative.

As you prepare to potty train or you are in the midst of potty training take some time to write your expectations, what the child's favorite things to do on a day to day basis and rewards they enjoy receiving. Think about things you can implement into potty training.

Do they enjoy watching certain movies? Then consider placing a potty chair in the room they watch movies in. If they enjoy playing in a specific room place the potty in it and allow them to implement it into their play time. Encourage them to show their toys how to go potty.

If the child loves popsicles, lollipops, cookies or another treat consider giving them one while they take a little time to at least try to use the potty. Rewarding a child should be more than just a treat. Renting a new movie they've wanted to see, a trip to Mc Donald's, or creating a treasure basket/box. Utilize what your child enjoys.

If you have ever heard someone say the first few years of a child's life is critical to development they are right. A child's life is significantly sculpted the first few years by the parents and the environment they are in.

The way a parent deals with potty training can affect the way the child handles the potty training process. This is why we emphasize to parents that if you are feeling stressed your child does pick up on it. The child will tense up and thus resist potty training.

If you the parent are feeling frustrated so will your child. You do not have to have outward expressions of frustration for your child to be affected either. Children have a keen sense of when someone is upset.

Potty training is a vital part of development that requires both the parent and child to prepare for it to be successful. Be sure that your child is showing signs of readiness.

Potty Training is supposed to be a milestone in a child's life and the opportunity for parents, guardians and childcare providers to bond with the child. But sometimes potty training turns into a chaotic nightmare leaving the potty trainer frustrated with the potty trainee.

In reality it is not the child's fault. This is a time that is a learning experience for a child. Many do not stop to realize that this is a milestone, something the child has never experienced before and must be guided and directed in a positive way. If the potty trainer is frustrated the chances of successful potty training dwindles. Take a few days for both the trainer and trainee.

Being frustrated puts up a road block that will not reopen until the trainer is able to work on having a positive outlook on potty training. Children Will pick up on the trainers frustrations and continue to resist. Potty problems including potty accidents will be the norm until one changes their attitude.

Potty Training Frustrations

Having a child who won't potty train for what seems like everything can leave your nerves frayed and at wits end. Daycares give you threatening deadlines, family members hound you and friends refuse to let their kids play with yours just because your child is not potty trained. At times you feel like you are in a corner and cannot get out. You try not to get mad at your child and yet the moment you smell the obvious there is nothing holding you back from lashing out.

All this is normal and common. Parents get frustrated when the pressure is on because their child is not like the others.

At pottytrainingsite.com we understand. Personally, I have been in this situation and it is not one I will soon forget.

Each child potty trains differently: at different ages, different times, different ways and with different people.

Now parents are looking at potty training their children as soon as they start walking. Others still want to wait until they feel their child is ready or more mature. Either way it is okay. And sometimes a child doesn't potty train because of developmental delays or medical problems. If in doubt talk to your child's pediatrician.

Grab a notebook or a journal and just write what you want with a positive attitude.

With mine I discovered he had some developmental delays that have indicated he is immature for his age. I was taught to change my attitude and let potty training go for a few days. And wouldn't you know it worked! Now I am here to help other parents get through potty training successfully even when things seem very impossible.

As a child gets older they look to expand their independence. When mom or dad tells them they have to do something, they want to resist and do it their way. Potty training is no different. As a child gets older they don't want to sit down on the potty every hour for a few minutes. It cuts into their play time, tv time, outside time and any other fun things that are taking place. Parents must be creative with potty training. As I mentioned before, you want to be creative.

As children get older they move towards independence. When you initiate potty training during the toddler years it can become a tug of war. Very active children don't want to stop and go potty. Interruptions can turn into a battle.

Anytime a negative reaction/response is made around potty training a child will pick it up as bad. For example, a mom admitted she told her daughter one day that playing in the potty was bad after catching her doing it. Thereafter, her daughter would throw tantrums when taken to the potty. All she knew from that time on was that the potty was bad.

Accidents happen because children are active little people. They don't want to stop playing or be interrupted from a favorite tv show or movie on. In some cases they are even afraid to tell someone such as a babysitter or someone else they are not familiar with that they need to go potty. It can also be an unfamiliar place they are afraid of.

So many parents send their stories to me asking why their child doesn't tell them they need to go potty. In the beginning and until a child becomes consistent AND independent parents do not need to rely on a child telling them. Take a child every time on a consistent schedule until the child shows an effort to go or at least tell you they need to go potty.

What a parents says or does especially during potty training can affect a child's attempt to be potty trained. When a parent becomes frustrated it is time to stop and step back for awhile. Children DO pick up on a parents feelings whether they express them or not. Spanking, yelling ,s screaming or any type of punishment for that matter will result in a child resisting potty training as they will relate the punishment for not going potty correctly as bad and thus will resist all together. It is so important that parents praise no matter what. Let your child know that it is OK and encourage them to try again.

Rewards are not bribes. They are a great way to show your child appreciation and praise for trying. Give bonuses such as an extra cookie, popsicle, sticker or another reward for successful potty attempts. Hug your child each time and let them know they did great.

Frustrations with potty training are very common. Children resisting, refusing to use the potty or even just to poop happen everyday all over the world. Parents often feel like a failure especially when their friends and family make a comment or another child the same age is already potty trained.

One thing a parent must know is that they are not alone. If you are frustrated as is your child then take a step back from potty training for at least a few days. Find other things to do that will distract you from thinking about potty training. Allow yourself to relax and for your child to as well.

I understand parents are scrambling to get their child potty trained before school begins, before a big move or even before a baby arrives. The more you push the more they will push back. If a child is excessively resisting it's time to let go and work on other things. As difficult as this may be, it is so important to take a step back.

Potty training is a huge milestone for a child. What a parent does can leave a lasting impression on them. Changing an attitude to a more positive one where it is believable that their child will be potty trained soon and imagining what it is like already can make a huge difference. Praising a child for all efforts made helps. Rewarding them for trying helps.

And rewarding is NOT bribing. It's telling the child I appreciate your efforts and lets try again. Give bonuses for successful attempts such as extra treats, and make a BIG deal out of it. Motivate your child to keep trying.

Think about this: your child is just learning how to use the potty. In the future they will be trying many other things. Motivating them leaves a lasting impression on them for the future. They'll know if they keep trying and trying eventually things will work out.

A child may scream and cry out of frustration, being distracted, tired, fear or even sickness. Does your child find comfort in a toy? Then integrate it into potty training. Do they have favorite shows they watch on tv or a favorite movie? Then put the small potty in front of the tv. GRAB their attention!

Potty accidents are inevitable. Continue praising them even when they have accidents. Don't make them feel bad for something they are learning about. Reassure them it is OK while having them help you clean it up. This alone can deter them quickly from having anymore accidents.

Be consistent. Time and time again I receive emails from parents at wits end because they immediately expect their child to tell them they need to go potty. This is a super high expectation in the beginning! Take your child to the potty and keep doing it until they start to make the effort to tell you they need to go. This may take a week to a few weeks to even montths. They will eventually get it down and be independent.

Be patient. As much as we want our children to learn things quickly, all children are different. Make potty training a positive fun experience. Hug your child often and view this time as a wonderful time to bond even more with them.

There came a time in my life that I literally thought I was a failure as a parent. My son refused to use the potty. I had friends and family on my case all the time lecturing me about being stern with him and that I was being too weak on him. I had just became a single parent of three kids with the youngest a newborn baby.

Caleb's dad and my ex husband used every excuse in the world to not take time out to visit with him. "He is not potty trained. When he is I will start taking him places."

I was exhausted, feeling like I was at wits end and I never thought Caleb would Ever potty train. It was humiliating enough that neighborhood kids as well as his sister would come in and tell me Caleb had pooped in his pants. Caleb was nearing his fourth birthday and kids were making fun of him already.

I wanted him in Headstart Pre-K but they would not accept him until he was potty trained.

Frustrated with potty training your son? I know the feeling. As a mom of three with two being boys, I do understand.

When my oldest turned two I decided to start working on potty training. He peed in the potty a few times and that was it. He wanted no more of the potty. So I waited. Then disaster struck. His dad and I separated, his sister went with their dad, I lost my job and then we had to move. On top of that a new baby would be arriving soon.

I tried countless times to work on potty training to no avail. He was nearing his fourth birthday and it didn't look like hope was anywhere near. I got tired of neighbor kids or his sister letting me know he had pooped in his pants. I was already changing diapers on a baby and changing his pull up was getting annoying and exhausting.

Believe it or not I was getting pressured to get him potty trained. It was obvious some people were on the edge of wanting to criticize me for not taking the time out to get him potty trained. Others were coming out and critcizing me as if I was a bad mom.

I was frustrated, pressured and at my wits end with potty training my son. I wanted him in Head Start Pre-K in the Fall 2006. They would not take him unless he was potty trained.

Then I met someone from my church who was a teacher for the 2 year olds at the church's daycare. In her class is when they would start potty training the kids so she gave me some advice on potty training Caleb. She could tell I was about to lose it with potty training him and wanted to help. I was willing to listen I just wasn't sure anything would work anymore.

I was told that I have to relax. That, I wasn't so sure about. I was pretty much a single mom raising three kids with one old enough to be in preschool and the other barely and infant. Here are the three things she told me to do:

1) Relax. Find other things to focus on for awhile besides potty training. If I am frustrated he is picking up on it and of course, will resist going.

2) Be consistent with potty training. Take him often, yourself. Don't wait to have him tell you he needs to go because by then it will be too late.

3) Praise him for his efforts. This means no matter what happens you put on a smile, hug your child and praise him for trying to go.

4) If he has an accident, have him help you clean it up. This can deter some boys from continuously having accidents. After the third or fourth time of having to clean themselves up it gets tiring. Thus, they'll try to make an effort to go potty instead.

5) Utilize things that bring comfort. Some children are just scared to go potty. It's an unknown to them, especially when trying to get them to go poop. For my son, I let him take his favorite stuffed animal with him to the potty. In this case, it was his large Blue's Clues.

Within ONE weekend I was able to get Caleb potty trained! I felt so good inside yet I had my doubts it would last. It did last and three years later at age 7, he is a very rambuncious active boy.

There are a few things I found out about Caleb shortly after he started Pre-K: He had some developmental delays. His speech was delayed as was his motor skills. He could barely hold a crayon or pencil because he had almost no muscle strength. Stressors in a child's life can affect them being potty trained. If you are going through a stressful situation, step back from potty training until you can get things under control or you will hit a brick wall with them. I had to find ways to relax and find time to prepare myself for potty training. When I felt good I worked with him and it worked.

Potty training is possible even when you have hit that brick wall. Take a step back, focus on the things that make you feel good while preparing yourself for potty training. Resume when you feel you are ready to dedicate a few days to it.

I finally took a break and focused on other things that helped me feel better such as college. Within a few months thanks to the advice of a friend who has worked with hundereds of toddler children and potty training, Caleb was potty trained!

As a mom of three, from my own experience it is so important that parents are ready for potty training. If you are not in the right mindset that includes a positive attitude, it's not the right time. Girls can potty train between the ages of 18 months and 3 years while boys can potty train from 2 to 3 1/2. Now with that said, potty training a child varies. There are some parents who as soon as their child is walking will have them potty trained. Others discover their child has a medical issue or a developmental delay contributing to problems potty training. Be aware of how your child is acting about potty training. What happens once you get your child consistently going to the potty? Well, many things can happen. Most children will continue on smoothly while others will hit bumps in the road. There are also the times when they have accidents every so often. It's all common and it is okay.

Reassuring your child that it is okay after an accident or a time when they go backwards is so important. Keep it as positive as possible and always praise them for their efforts.

Just today my youngest son who is 4 years old (and been potty trained for six months) had an accident while we were eating lunch at Burger King. I had just taken him to the potty prior to eating and he went pee. A few minutes after going to the play area he informs me he pooped in his pants.

Kids around his age or a little older were staring at him because he obviously smelled. I let him know nicely that he needed to tell me when he has to go potty otherwise the other children will smell him and say something. It upset him and rightfully so.

He didn't like the fact he had soiled his underwear and that I had to clean him. There is also nothing like trying to take your child's soiled underwear off of him and then getting some of it on you in the process.

It wasn't fun for me although my son got a laugh in. I wasn't mad though. I just wanted him to understand he has to tell me when he need to go both pee pee and poo poo.

And yes, I scrubbed my wrist and hands very well.

Is my child ready for potty training? How do I start potty training?

These are just two of the most common questions I often get from parents.

Around the age of 18 months some children will go through the I-want-to-be-naked-and-without-a-diaper phase. They'll potty anywhere but the diaper or the potty itself. This is okay because it is a normal part of development.

They are becoming more aware of their bodily functions with some they don't exactly like. So the best thing a parent can do is direct their child to a positive, alternate way of dealing with the bodily functions. Introduce them to the potty just by encouraging them to try it. Make a big deal out of it in a very excited way. Nudge them if you have to.

Of course there may be potty training accidents here and there. Potty training is a very important part of the development in a child. They are learning and parents, care providers as well as any other important people in their life are the teachers.

I often get asked a very common potty training problem question: Why does my child pee in the potty but not poop? They have tried for months if not a year to get their child to use the potty for both peeing and pooping.

There are some valid reasons for a child refusing to poop in the potty. When a child is still wearing a diaper or even a pull up and they poop it is close to them. They don't have to worry about it falling into some scary thing (the potty). Sitting on the potty can be scary enough for some children which is why I recommend starting out with the small potty. If there have been any traumatic experiences such as constipation pooping in anything else than a comforting diaper is going to result in resistance. If a child has had physical complications such as a deformed anus or even born with out one and had to have surgery this can also pose an issue.

The most important thing parents must remember is Be patient, encouraging and understanding. Find creative ways to keep your child comfortable and cooperative with potty training. It is also very important to stay consistent even when your child may resist. Give them a nudge without forcing them to go or even bribing. If they find comfort in a favorite toy such as a stuffed animal or a blanket allow them to take it with them to the potty. Or if you know your child can be entertained by the tv or even a favorite movie try that. A child may find comfort in having a lollipop or a popsicle. Creative and healthy ways is very important because potty training is a vital part of your childs development.

Lately I have been getting questions from parents regarding pooping in the potty. It seems their child will go pee pee but not pooping. This is quite common in children. There can be many factors though.

One, a child has been in a diaper since birth. When they poop it stays next to their skin. Transitioning from the diaper to using the potty can be an overwhelming experience. The potty can be scary too. Also, some children experience painful or traumatic bowel movement incidents. This can leave a lasting impression on them. I dealt with the doesn't want to poop in the potty problem mostly with my middle child.

What I did was let my son take his favorite toy with him to the potty which at that time was Blue from Blue's Clues. Within a few days I was able to get better cooperation with him.

I also recommend utilizing a consistent schedule taking him or her to the potty as often as you can such as every hour. Be creative in ways to keep your child occupied and entertained because children during the toddler and preschool years definitely do not want to sit and wait.

I still remember so much about the problems I faced with potty training my middle child and oldest son Caleb over three years ago in 2006.

I had tried to potty train him since the year prior. Everything had been going great. We went and purchased a potty and he was showing interest in using it. Then I lost my job, found out I was expecting another baby and his father and I separated. I was very stressed out.

It was hard to deal with an unplanned pregnancy and a toddler who didn't want to potty train. I thought I had enough time though to recover from the stresses in my life to work on potty training Caleb.

However, it wasn't that easy. I tried several times inconsistently to work on potty training. As he got older it was getting more frustrating. Then I had the baby and Caleb wanted to also be the baby. It even got to the point of pressure from friends and family besides the embarassment of having neighbor children come to my door telling me Caleb had messed in his pants. I was beginning to feel overwhelmed.

My youngest son Hunter recently potty trained which was a great relief. He resisted for some time because of pressure from his daycare and dad to get potty trained. I was all for letting him show readiness though his dad insisted he get potty trained to move on to a great preschool his older siblings had attended.

This past weekend Hunter was invited to a daycare friends birthday party. I was a little concerned in the back of my mind about him staying dry. Even though it has been nearly two months since he successfully trained, I was still a little hesistant. Hunter still has to be reminded about going everyday although he will tell me at least twice he needs to go.

The birthday party was going to be filled with other children Hunter's age with some a little older and a little younger. One of the first things the host-grandma showed us was where the bathrooms were. Of course at any given time the bathrooms were both occupied with preschoolers throughout the two hour period.

Since most of the kids were active just about the entire time of the party I realized I was going to have to take Hunter myself. He did resist a little with me until I sat him down on the pottty, held him (to keep from falling in) and just talking to him. Within a minute he did his business and was ready to go back to the party festivities.

It is so important for parents to understand that just because their child is now potty trained it does not mean they will automatically go on their own or tell you when they have to go, especially when you are out doing errands.

For a time you will have to take time out and take them to the potty. Always have something that will keep your child cooperative and or comfortable.

For my kids they were terrified of flusing the potty out in a public place since it would flush very loudly. Since I usually have an older child with me, a friend or a family member, I usually let my child go to them then flush it.

In time your child will be able to let you know when they have to go potty. Even after successful training a schedule and consistentcy still needs to be maintained to avoid accidents.

Potty training has its ups and downs. As a mom of three kids I understand many of them. My daughter who is 11 now was the easiest to potty train. For my middle child, he went through the most stressful times in our lives though he also had some developmental delays that contributed to him potty training so late. For my youngest son he was constantly pushed at daycare and by his dad to get potty trained. Once they decided to back off he decided to work with them.

As a parent you have to be observant of the environment your child is currently in while potty training. If it is stressful I recommend a parent back off for awhile until things calm down. If your child has been tested or is showing indications of a developmental delay, be prepared that it is going to take more time to get them trained.

Often I get questions from parents about using pull ups. When they first came out I thought they were the greatest thing until I found out from some daycare providers that they mostly hinder the potty trainining process. In fact, I was told they are not much different than a diaper.

With my youngest son though, his dad and the daycare insisted he be put in them. Now, had my friend Janice been working at the daycare as she used to, she would not have recommended them. She would have put my son directly into underwear and worked with him.

For my middle child pull ups were the only thing we could use after awhile because he grew out of the biggest diaper available.

One main concern for parents while potty training is taking them out to do errands or visit places like a friends or grandma and grandpa's house. I recommend that parents take their child to the potty to sit for a few minutes just before walking out the door. With my youngest child I still take two extra pairs of clothing.

I do my best to keep up with the times he goes to the potty by taking him about every hour. At least twice a day he will tell me himself he has to go. Otherwise I see him holding himself or dancing around.

Children are active little creatures so the last thing they want to do is sit on the potty. I remind parents of this because a child is going to find some reason to not go sit on the potty. Find something that is comforting and entertaining such as a toy when taking them. If you have to for a while use the small potty and put it in their play room, bedroom or wherever they are watching tv. This has worked great for my kids and has resulted in less messes to deal with. And less potty training clothing accidents to change.

Potty training is a learning process for your child. The questions I have been receiving from parents lately is why won't my child tell me when they have to go potty? When I dig further I discover they are still in the potty training process.

This is a very important time in your child's psychological development. When you are consistently taking your child to the potty they will begin to relate the feelings/urges they get with peeing and pooping as it is time to go potty. Accidents happen and are common. What I want parents to understand is that this is part of the potty training process. Your child is learning something they have never learned before.

Parents are the teachers as well as childcare providers. What you make of potty training with your child is going to last their life time whether it is on the surface or deep within. I encourage parents to be creative and stay as positive as possible during the potty training process.

When I am answering questions from parents regarding potty training, one of the most common issues is transitions.

Parents start a new job, mom is expecting a new baby, they have or will be moving or something else. Their child was doing great with potty training and suddenly they have regressed.

Whenever there are transitions in the household and your child has just potty trained chances are there will be some regression (potty accidents). The best way to handle regression is to understand first that your child is feeling the tension or any other feelings you may be having. Secondly, be patient with your child.

When I first read the article I was shocked to find out what the child's teacher had done after he had an accident. From what was read this was not the first time this child has had an accident.

While feelings regarding what the teacher did were mixed, once I analyzed the situation I understood the teachers intentions. However, I did not agree with her sending evidence home to the parents. Perhaps a phone call to the parents when the incident happened is sufficient.

Potty training doesn't always go as planned. Days, weeks, months and even years may go by and suddenly a child is having accidents. It can be from extreme stress, physical ailments, diseases, etc.

I remember my brother having serious problems early on in elementary school. He had numerous bowel movement accidents at home and school. Our principal was on medical leave and the interim principal had enough and put my brother on homebound for the remainder of his third grade year.

Another three years go by and the two of us are living with our paternal grandmother. She takes him to her doctor who finally diagnosed him as having a Spastic colon. With exercise particularly to build his stomach muscles and some changes in his diet within a month there was a drastic change.

Many people just assumed it was a mental issue for my brother. He was chastised, disciplined and isolated during all those years before his diagnosis. Even the people whom he was supposed to depend on for an education let him down immensely.

At 28 years old my brother is a totally different person. I am not sure about him though the memories of those years living with him and his spastic colon have left a lasting impression I believe in order to help others.

Every day I am asked questions about when to start potty training or how should one deal with problems that arise?

Potty training is a BIG transition for a child. They have been depending on mom and or dad since birth to care for them. Now it is time to be trained to do something Big on their own.

Potty training girls is typically around age 2 to 2 1/2 although I have met parents who have successfully potty trained their daughters as early as a year old. Potty training boys is typically around age 3 to 3 1/2. Again, this is just average. Some boys have potty trained at age 2. Look for the cues to see if your child is ready.

If they are staying dry during nap time and at bed time, showing discomfort in wearing a soiled diaper and/or wanting to use the potty then your child is indicating they are ready to go for the big transition.

I remind parents that potty training is a learning experience for their child. Make it as positive as possible. If you become frustrated, upset or even discouraged your child will pick up on it and refuse to potty train.

There are times though that potty training will have setbacks and can get you down. I know because I have been there with all three of my kids. I can also tell you though that those setbacks do get better eventually disappearing.

Even my middle child who is almost seven has times he wets the bed. So how do I deal with it? Many times I forget to stop letting him have drinks after a certain time before bedtime. I have to remind him to use the bathroom before bed. When he is at his dads he wakes him up about an hour or two after going to sleep for the night.

Potty training my middle child was a challenge. Only later on I found out why it was this way. My son Caleb at 2 1/2 was showing interest in using the potty. I bought him a potty and began showing him how to use it. He became successful at peeing in it. The pooping though was another issue. Shortly after beginning the process, I lost my job then I found out I was expecting a baby. His dad and I had separated then we had to move. All these transitions led to him refusing to potty train. Nearly a year later my son still had very little interest in potty training. In fact, he didn't care to go out, play and run around with a soiled pull up until a neighborhood child would come and let me know about it. This was embarassing for me and frustrating. He was into blue's clues then so he carried his big blue into the bathroom. This is when he started using the potty all on his own. If they love to be read to, consider reading a book. The same is true with singing. Whatever gets them comfortable enough to potty utilize it.

My youngest son Hunter has cooperated so much better when I allow him to carry a Thomas the train or one of Thomas' friends to the potty. He is comfortable and willing to try.

You must also remember that kids will tell you they do not need to go. In the beginning you will have to make your child go until they show consistency and independence in going to the potty.

It is okay to nudge your child. Be observant in what makes your child comfortable when using the potty. This is also a time to bond with your child. If at all possible potty train when you can dedicate a few days to just them.

Most of us have been affected somehow by the economy. So what if you have a child on the verge of potty training? Do you hold off because you are in a comfort zone and don't have time to focus on potty training?

If you and your child are in the process of getting ready to potty train now is the time to get serious about it. Why? Because for one, you Are going to save money!

No more diapers, wipes, ointments, big bulky diaper bags and searching for a place to change a diaper when you are not at home! Potty training saves your sanity.

Some childcare facilities will charge you less when your child is potty trained. Imagine being able to forget about childcare and getting your child in a preschool or even Headstart.

I have been asked lately about various potty training programs. These are from people who have no idea that I co-own a potty training site along with my friend Janice.

I have been looking into other programs that are supposed to offer potty training in 3 days or less. This is great if you are a mom who stays at home long enough to dedicate yourself to the one child or possibly two who are ready to potty train. Chances are you are not one who really has the time or possibly the support to get it done very quickly.

Not every story is a success. Success depends on you and how much time and patience you are willing to have. Sometimes we do hear from parents who are at wits end, tried our program and are not happy. Most of them we know do not have the patience, their child or themselves were not ready to potty train.

Our program is about having that mental preparation, a positive attitude, and an understanding that there are going to be some setbacks and how to handle them. Attitude is everything with potty training

Did you know that what you are feeling affects your child during the potty training process? Children are great at picking up body language. If you are feeling anxious, tense, or even frustrated it does not matter if you are verbally expressing feelings or not. Children pick it up anyways and the result is they resist the process.

This is why we insist both you and your child are completely ready to potty train for the process to be successful. Understand that there are going to be some setbacks, but they are a time for learning. Like anything in life this process is challenging yet it is a learning experience for both you and your child. When they do occur let your child know it is okay and that you do care about them. The greatest thing you can do for them is give them a hug. It's okay. We will try again very soon.

This also a time for unconditional love. Spanking, punishing, yelling, or any other forms of discipline are to be off limits for the process to be successful. If you are beginning to feel upset then immediately stop what you are doing and take a break. Even if it means you try again in a few days it is best to be free of any upset.

If you have a child with any disabilities patience will be a virtue. Sometimes the process takes longer than the average child though potty training success will happen.

No matter what, having a positive attitude is a must.

Making A Potty Training Chart

Free Potty Training Chart

Many parents have found that using a potty training chart has been fun and helpful while going through the potty training stage. I know there are many free charts available, but I suggest that you make your own. A child loves to do things with his parents and this is a good project to work on while you explain what it is going to be used for.

Is all you need is a poster board, some crayons or markers, stickers, glue, magazine pictures of children using the potty, and some imagination which will come from your child. Also put words on the poster like "big kid" or "I can do it". Allow your child to color the poster and watch the excitement grow.

Make potty training fun for you and your child. The method I teach shows you how to include your child's imagination while learning to potty.

This is a time of bonding as well as learning to take responsibility. Your child can use his imagination as he learns to use the potty and when he does use the potty he will be happy to place a sticker or draw a picture on the chart you and he created.

Potty Train a girl or Potty Train a boy it doesn't matter

Accidents and odors

Even before I began potty training my own children every once in awhile they would have accidents the diapers just wouldn't hold up to.

After I got them potty trained, they still would sometimes have accidents.

At night was probably the worst for my son Caleb. If I forgot to remind him to use the potty before bedtime, sometimes he would have an accident in bed.

What's worse is the stains left behind by accidents. It didn't matter how many times I washed things the stain still lingered.

I have tried many sprays that are supposed to contain odor fighting ingredients. Some just cover it and others do not have such a pleasant smell like they claim.

Then I came across a spray called S.O.S which is a smoke, odor, and stain eliminator. I was skeptical this would even work. It is made by a company most people have not even heard of.

I tested it on my furniture, in my garbage can, and on my oldest children's bags and things- their father smokes. So when they come back from dad's house everything smells like cigarette smoke. It's embarassing for us to be smelling like that.

I love S.O.S because it really does eliminate the odors. They don't come back after awhile either.

As for stains, it does really work. We know that grape juice stains. Try having a powder vitamin supplement containing grape seed extract and red wine stained on your carpet that is brand new.

It was on my carpet for two days before I used S.O.S. I sprayed it on the stained area. I let it sit. I came back a few hours later and sprayed some more then I started working on it with a wash cloth. At first I was concerned I was just spreading it rather than cleaning it up.

I worked on it for five minutes and could see progress. There was still a small area so I sprayed S.O.S again and let it sit. I came back several hours later and sprayed some more then worked on it again. This time I got all of the stain out. I was so happy and pleased with the S.O.S.

I have used it on the carpet when I let my youngest son "air out." He wasn't ready for potty training . I used S.O.S when he had accidents on the carpet.

After a long time of hard thinking and research, we decided to add a forum.

I am involved in several mommy groups online and one of their biggest issues is potty training. Whether it is their daughter or son that is healthy or have developmental issues, they want to talk to others about their struggles.

I personally have struggled with potty training and wished someone could help me right away. Luckily, I found Janice and from there I was able to feel better and more confident about things.

Feeling Like A Bad Mommy

My sanity was saved when I met Janice at church. I was desperate by the time I had the opportunity to talk with her about my son Caleb. After I implemented her method, Caleb potty trained in one weekend.

I was a single mom to three children with Caleb being the middle child. He was nearing his fourth birthday and still was not potty trained.

At the time, I was also going through a custody battle for my youngest son. When I was relayed some information that criticized me for not having my son potty trained.

It hurt really bad yet I was frustrated. Even my ex husband was criticizing me when I felt he should be the one to help potty train our son.

Then Janice came along assuring me that Caleb would be potty trained. I was still skeptical though. Caleb had not shown any interest at all in learning to use the potty. It was almost as if he enjoyed being in soiled pants.

Countless days and nights I cried. I was angry, frustrated, and even depressed about it.

The opportunity to enroll Caleb in Head Start Pre-K was approaching quickly, but he had to be potty trained. I was not sure we would make it in time for school to begin.

Occassionally Caleb would pee in the potty. He just never had a bowel movement in it.

I felt I couldn't go anywhere with Caleb because the risk was just too much for him to have an accident.

The older he got the more I felt like a bad mommy. Helpless is the word I would describe as to how I felt.

As people say about things that have to get worse before they get better, this is one of them.

Janice gave me the tips to work with Caleb and I utilized them. That weekend, Caleb was potty trained! I was amazed yet I was still very cautious.

The more time that went by, the more relieved I was feeling.

And after talking with Janice about our potty training success, she explained to me that being angry, upset, frustrated, or even depressed only inhibits the potty training.

I also learned that much of what had been going on in our lives: moving, new baby, divorce most likely also contributed to the inhibition of potty training.

New Product For Nursery And The Rest Of The Home

Hey everyone!

I have found a new product to help eliminate odors in the nursery. It is non toxic and it helps to eliminate bacteria that causes odors.

It contains biodegradable enzymes that are safe to use in the baby's room.

I have tested this product out at the daycare and have found it to be very effective in eliminating the odors from the soiled diapers in the diaper pail.

The Way You Think About Potty Training Boys And Girls

Change Your Thinking

Change the way you think is a big topic these days. People are being told to change the way they think in order to improve their health. I say that parents need to change the way they think about potty training in order to get their child potty trained.

Children are very susceptible to people’s emotions, and often your emotions are affected by your thoughts. Whenever you are potty training your child and you become frustrated you need to take a step back and re-evaluate your thoughts. Get yourself back into a positive mindset and then start to potty training your child again.

In my e-book I mention that you need to let your child use a toy to learn how to use the potty. This imaginative role-playing will teach you many things. It will teach you about yourself and what you are saying to your child as you teach him to use the potty.

If you see a negative image from this role playing you need to go back and re-examine what you were thinking when you started to potty train your child. Are you dwelling on anything negative or are you remembering a story about potty training that was not successful?

If the answer is yes to the question above, you need to stop what you are thinking and change the thought. To do this you need to focus on the goal you wish to accomplish by picturing in your mind having a potty trained child. Go ahead and get the feeling of what it will be like when you no longer have to buy diapers. Doesn't it feel wonderful?

Now that you have that feeling, get a picture of a child using the potty and place it, with your child’s name on it, on the wall behind the potty. Every time you take your child to the potty or you go to the potty yourself, look at that picture and get the positive thought and feeling in your mind. This will help you to stay focused and will create a positive environment your child to be successful with potty training.

Once again, stay focused on the positive thought and feeling.
